Endocannabinoids are endogenous cannabis-like substances that play a vital role in the endogenous cannabinoid system. This system is a lipid signaling system that regulates many bodily functions in all vertebrates. These endocannabinoids are small molecules derived from arachidonic acid, anandamide, and 2-arachidonoylglycerol. These molecules bind to a family of GPCR’s in areas of the brain related to motor control, cognition, emotion, behavior, and homeostasis. Outside of the brain, endocannabinoids are modulators of the autonomic nervous system, immune system, and microcirculation. The study of endocannabinoids has been linked to further understanding the physiological role that these molecules play and the treatment of pain, obesity, neurological diseases, and drug addiction.
