C11 TopFluor L-carnitine is a fluorescent acylcarnitine analog in which L-carnitine is esterified to a C11 TopFluor-labeled fatty acid. This material mimics the behavior of acylcarnitines which allows for studying mitochondrial fatty acid transport and beta-oxidation dynamics. Unlike more polar fluorophores like NBD, the TopFluor moiety is compact and hydrophobic, causing minimal perturbation to the lipid structure. This enables visualization of carnitine transporter activity and the monitoring of acylcarnitine trafficking in live cells using fluorescence microscopy and related visual techniques.
