24:0 carnitine 870878 tetracosanoyl L-carnitine
24:0 Carnitine is a very long-chain acylcarnitine (VLCAC). Unlike short and medium chain fatty acids, VLCFAs cannot readily enter the mitochondria and must first undergo initial beta-oxidation within the peroxisomes. Because of this specialized metabolic routing, 24:0 Carnitine is a highly specific biomarker for peroxisomal dysfunction.
Elevated levels of 24:0 Carnitine and other VLCACs are diagnostic indicators for peroxisomal biogenesis disorders (such as Zellweger spectrum disorders) and specific transport defects. This lipid standard is essential for clinical diagnostics, particularly in newborn screening panels utilizing MS assays, as well as for targeted lipidomic studies investigating neurodegenerative diseases and metabolic profiling.
