Glycolithocholic acid

Glycolithocholic Acid (Lithocholylglycine / Glycolithocholate) is a natural endogenous metabolite and the glycine conjugated form of the bile acid (BA) lithocholic acid. It’s also an acyl glycine.

Lithocholic acid is one of the secondary BAs and derives from the primary BA chenodeoxycholic acid under the effect of bacterial action in the colon. It’s one of the most toxic BAs and is able to induce cholestatic liver damage. Lithocholic acid and other secondary and primary BAs undergo a process of conjugation with the amino acids glycine or taurine in liver hepatocytes. It’s the same mechanism whereby Glycolithocholic Acid is obtained.

Glycholithocholic Acid’s main application is to serve as a predictive marker in the diagnosis of ulcerative colitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

The glycine conjugate is increased in the liver of rats on a diet supplemented with ursodeoxycholic acid. Whereas, its plasma concentrations are reduced after subcutaneous administration of PEG-obestatin - a modified peptide hormone.

Serum Glycolithocholic Acid levels are observed to physiologically rise with age in children.
