The non-fluorescent phospholipid counterpart of the compound is a phosphatidylcholine with two saturated fatty acyl groups, stearoyl- and oleoyl-groups, at positions 1 and 2 respectively.

The compound is labeled with a nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD) fluorescent label to acquire specific fluorescence characteristics to explore the dynamic structural properties of lipid bilayers and cell membrane functions, pH monitoring, signal transduction, and more.
