VSA-2 is a semisynthetic saponin adjuvant engineered from Momordica saponin II (MS II), a compound derived from the seeds of Momordica cochinchinensis, a tropical climbing plant native to Southeast Asia. A functionalized side chain is introduced at the C3-position of its branched trisaccharide domain, creating a well-defined, high-purity immunostimulant. Its intended purpose is activating both humoral and cellular immune responses.

In preclinical studies, VSA-2 matches the immunogenic performance of QS-21, a widely used clinical adjuvant in animal models, offering equivalent consistency and scalability.
